SOIMON

New Fast and Reliable Technology for Soil Inspection in Contaminated Sites with Machinery Condition Monitoring

An important aspect of environmental site investigation is the use of a conceptual model of the soil and of the pollution involved. This conceptual model shows the knowledge gaps required to understand the pollution situation. During drilling into soil, collecting information on soil properties is important to construct a conceptual site model.

It is not easy to take measurements during drilling: the vibrations of the drill are so large that electronics and instruments can fail. In the EU project SOIMON, Medusa and European partners developed a platform that can compensate these vibrations during drilling. In the project we have introduced our knowledge about sensing radiation and a gamma spectrometer is built into a drilling cone. The developed platform can dampen a large part of the vibrations. In pilot measurements, the gamma-ray spectrometer has proven its ability to measure soil properties during drilling.

The EU project SOIMON, in which Medusa has been able to use both its knowledge of radiation technology and its expertise in the field of environmental issues, was completed in September 2015.
